The Alchemist

In the beginning of the book Santiago was a kid who believed that dreams could come true if you try and achieve them. He was a kid who was only looking to travel. So far he has learned that it's not that easy to achieve a dream, it takes a while and maybe you won't even get to achieve your dream. Also that there's other things in life than just traveling.
Santiago is totally different from the beginning. Before all he wanted to do was just be a Sheppard so he could travel. Now he wants to go to pyramids in Egypt just to find the treasure that he dreamed about. He now don't trust no stranger. He learned it from a bad experience.

I agree with you that Santiago now want to pursue his own personal legend rather than just being a normal shepherd. And I have never notice that Santiago is now more careful with his procession. It is true. I just want to add that he is able to make the decision to go for the treasure rather than going back and be a shepherd because he realize that no matter what happens he could always go back, be a shepherd and be himself. He realize that there is really no cost to pursue the treasure.
